De-cluttering for others?

I’ve been interested in decluttering for years. Infact this isn’t even my first blog post on the subject. (Living with less, Minimalism with children, Minimalism and me)

Recently I’ve been thinking of taking my interest further, seeing if there is a way that I can help others.

I know there are a lot of people out there who know their lives would be a lot better without all of the clutter, but the idea of decluttering is scary and stressful.

“Where do I begin?”

“How do I part with all this stuff?”

“Where will it all go?”

“Will it actually be worth it in the end?”

Lots of people get stuck on that first one.

That’s where I come in.

I want to sit down with these people, chat with them about what exactly it is they find scary. Find out What the biggest hurdle they want to overcome is. That could be a junk room, a loft, or perhaps a deceased spouse’s wardrobe.
That scary hurdle, that’ll be our goal, our end destination. We certainly won’t start there.

I think I can help people begin.

I won’t be throwing things out for them. I won’t even be telling them what they HAVE to part with. I will simply be there by their side, encouraging, chatting, listening to the stories behind the prized possessions.

I want to be their support.

You don’t realise it but all that clutter, all those possessions are weighing you down. With each and every bag that leaves the house you will feel lighter. It’s like a physical relief.

Once you begin you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it years ago.

This isn’t an entirely selfless act. Yes I really do want to help people and I think I will enjoy doing it. But I do have an ulterior motive.

I see this as a stepping stone in the process of regaining my health. Getting me out of the house and improving my dwindling social skills!

So wish me luck!
